it’s actually really fascinating to me that

  • roses originally grew almost sideways, their thorns intended to be used as hooks to expand and spread, their petals were limited to five and their fragrance was overpowering. they attracted wildlife, creatures, birds, anything to them. their intent was to propagate like an idea.
  • humans then bred them to have more petals, to grow upright and therefore require excessive pruning just to remain upright, and then the thorns became largely superfluous
  • then, when those newly bred roses needed plucking and pruning, and humans pricked their fingers on the thorns, guess what happened?
  • the rose became this dual figure of bloom enticing and thorn rejecting, it became an idea of things that don’t add up, that bring you closer and cut you
  • when in reality, humans did this to themselves and in doing so, did this to the rose
